Pass the Salt

Salt. The additive that can seriously ruin a person’s evening when their partner dumps the stuff all over their carefully seasoned dinner. Not naming names here…

You probably haven’t put a lot of thought into this condiment lately. Shoot, why would you with so much other stuff going on? But, there’s a reason you should care…and why you should chuck that canister of Morton salt pronto.

Once you look into how many different types of salt there are you will see that the plain jane sodium chloride isn’t doing you any favors. Shoot, there’s special finishing salts, coarse salts, fine salts, pink salts, black salts…etc. Salt built many a nation just as it’s bloating this one!  Don’t misunderstand me though, salt (sodium rather) is essential to the survival of your beautiful body. Like anything, an excessive amount can be dangerous. But why? 1,500 milligrams of sodium is what a human body needs and the average American consumes over twice that. The sodium potassium pumps in our body move sodium in and potassium out, keeping the balance. So, if you have too much sodium and not enough potassium what happens?

“When potassium deficiencies have been produced in humans, these persons have quickly developed listlessness, fatigue, gas pains, constipation, insomnia, and low blood sugar. Their muscles become soft and flabby, and their pulse weak, slow, and irregular. An over abundance of salt is not the only perpetrator of a potassium deficiency. It can also be brought on by stress, medications such as ACTH, cortisone, and diuretics as well as by alcohol, coffee, or sugar.” LINK

You can begin to see why low-sodium diets don’t work. Because over 75% of the average American’s sodium comes from processed foods salt gets a bad rap. It’s all about quality here my friends. I switched to Himalayan pink salt almost 9 months ago. The first thing I noticed was how salty it was! Recently I found Celtic sea salt, which appears to rival Himalayan in the “best salt” category, in the bulk section. It’s so intriguing how all salts are not created equal! Celtic salt is more moist and less “salty”, and makes for a killer popcorn salt. These salts also contain essential minerals (hence the neat colors) and if you maintain a healthy intake, you can actually reverse heart and blood pressure issues.

Healthy salts are amazing! They are harvested more ecologically, they don’t have anticaking agents, stabilizer, bleaches and other such nonsense a body doesn’t need. Celtic salt is grey and contains magnesium as well (which is removed from table salt) which is also integral to a healthy body. Himalayan salt is pink due to its iron and mineral content and is used for therapeutic purposes as well. Oh, are you worried about iodine? Don’t be. It’s naturally occurring! It’s removed from table salt and added back in, which means it’s in the salt to begin with! The more nasty chemicals you can avoid, the better off your liver and immune system will be. So, pass the salt!
