The Most Important Meal

The morning is really tough for most of us. I think most people could pass as zombies in The Walking Dead before 7am (especially if they haven’t brushed their teeth yet!)…. Up that time frame to about 10am when the coffee kicks in. However, having a smoothie for breakfast will make you feel like a totally different person even if you haven’t had your coffee yet. I would say at least half of you reading this don’t have anything for breakfast, and half of those people probably tell their kids “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day”. Uh huh. You know who you are.

But breakfast IS the most important meal of the day!

  • Without eating breakfast, you’re more vulnerable to cravings and less likely to make healthy choices in the morning and throughout the day.
  • One study that tracked nearly 10,000 young people from adolescence into their twenties found that not only did skipping breakfast lead to being overweight, but people who missed out on their morning meal also increased their eating at fast food restaurants.
  • The prolonged fasting that occurs when you skip breakfast can increase your body’s insulin response, which in turn increases fat storage and weight gain. In fact, skipping breakfast actually increases your risk of obesity.

Think about it like this, if you eat 3 tablespoons of olive oil on Monday morning, and on Tuesday morning you have a smoothie, which day do you think you will be hungrier earlier? Both have identical caloric loads (Answer: Monday). It’s really all about a high-fiber / low-glycemic breakfast. Swings in blood sugar can make a person nuts, and you don’t even know what’s happening on the inside. A smoothie is almost like cheating, you get so much good stuff in such a compact meal. Plus, your body has less digestive work to do since your blender has masticated the food for you! So don’t let an extra 10-15 minutes in the morning stop you from potentially changing your entire life (I’m not kidding!). Smoothies can be perfectly tailored to taste and dietary needs unlike cereals, pastries, breakfast sandwiches or other common breakfast foods.

I invite you all to a Smoothie Challenge. For 3 weeks (only 21 days!), have a smoothie for breakfast. It would be a great idea to take a synopsis of yourself before and after as well.
